Förderung für neue Basisdienste zu Jupyter-Notebooks, Datenmanagementplänen und Wissensgraphen

In der vierten Ausschreibungsrunde von Base4NFDI haben alle drei Basisdienstanträge – Jupyter4NFDI, DMP4NFDI und KGI4NFDI – die Zusage von der NFDI-Konsortialversammlung für eine einjährige Initialisierungsphase erhalten. Base4NFDI gratuliert allen Teams ganz herzlich!

Dies stellt eine Erweiterung der NFDI-Initiative zum Aufbau von Basisdiensten für Konsortien dar und ist ein weiterer Schritt nach vorne in den Bemühungen, FDM-fähige Dienste aus der gesamten deutschen Forschungslandschaft zu schaffen.

Jupyter4NFDI zielt auf einen zentralen JupyterHub-Dienst ab, der Zugang zu verschiedenen Software-Stacks und Rechenleistung für die NFDI-Gemeinschaft bietet.

DMP4NFDI wird Tool-Hosting für Datenmanagementpläne, Standardisierung von Vorlagen, Unterstützung und Schulungen für NFDI-Konsortien anbieten.

KGI4NFDI wird ein Service-Hub sein, der Konsortien, Institutionen und Forschenden hilft, Wissensgraphen zu erstellen und zu verknüpfen, um die Interoperabilität innerhalb der NFDI und darüber hinaus sicherzustellen.

Funding for new basic services for Jupyter notebooks, data management plans and knowledge graphs

Base4NFDI is delighted to announce that all proposals submitted this February in Round 4 – Jupyter4NFDI, DMP4NFDI, and KGI4NFDI – have been accepted for funding of the initialisation phase following the Consortia Assembly’s decision! Congratulations to all basic service teams! 

This marks a growth in NFDI’s initiative to build basic services for consortia and demonstrates a step forward in the efforts to create RDM-enabling services from across the German research landscape.

Jupyter4NFDI will aim for a central JupyterHub providing access to various software stacks

and computing resources across the NFDI consortia.

DMP4NFDI will provide tool hosting for data management plans, template standardisation, support and training for NFDI consortia.

KGI4NFDI will be a service hub to help consortia, institutions and researchers create and link knowledge graphs to ensure interoperability within the NFDI and beyond.

Neuer Vorsitz für die Konsortialversammlung gewählt

Die Konsortialversammlung des NFDI-Vereins hat in ihrer Sitzung am 12.04.2024 turnusgemäß einen neuen Vorsitz gewählt. Prof. Dr. Christoph Eberl (NFDI-MatWerk), Dr. Barbara Ebert (NFDI4Biodiversity) und Prof. Dr. Stefanie Weidtkamp-Peters (NFDI4BIOIMAGE) werden den Vorsitz in der kommenden zweijährigen Amtszeit als kooperativ arbeitendes Team in rollierender Besetzung wahrnehmen. 

Die Amtszeit von Prof. Dr. Andreas Witt (Text+, Vorsitzender) und Dr. Dirk von Suchodoletz (DataPLANT, stellvertr. Vorsitzender) ist nach zwei Jahren ausgelaufen. Die Konsortialversammlung dankte den beiden für ihr großes Engagement.

New chairs elected for the Consortium Assembly

The Consortium Assembly of the NFDI Association elected new chairpersons at its meeting on 12 April 2024. Prof Dr Christoph Eberl (NFDI-MatWerk), Dr Barbara Ebert (NFDI4Biodiversity) and Prof Dr Stefanie Weidtkamp-Peters (NFDI4BIOIMAGE) will hold the chairmanship for the next two-year term as a cooperative team.

The mandate of Prof Dr Andreas Witt (Text+, Chairman) and Dr Dirk von Suchodoletz (DataPLANT, Deputy Chairman) has ended after two years. The Consortium Assembly thanked them both for their great commitment.

Statement zum Eckpunktepapier des Bundesministeriums für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF) zum Forschungsdatengesetz

Die Konsortialversammlung der Nationalen Forschungsdateninfrastruktur (NFDI) begrüßt die Zielsetzung des BMBF-Eckpunktepapiers zum Forschungsdatengesetz (FDG), den Zugang zu wissenschaftlichen Daten im Allgemeinen zu verbessern. Hierzu hat sie am 12. April 2024 ein Statement verabschiedet. Zum Positionspapier.

Statement on the Federal Ministry of Education and Research’s (BMBF) Key Issues Paper on the Research Data Act

The Consortia Assembly of the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) welcomes the objective of the BMBF’s Key Issues Paper on the Research Data Act (FDG) to improve access to scientific data in general. On 12 April 2024 it has adopted a statement on this subject.

FAIR Data Spaces ist ein “Gaia-X Qualified Project”

Das Projekt FAIR Data Spaces, an dem NFDI beteiligt ist, wurde im Rahmen des kürzlich eingerichteten Gaia-X Endorsement Programme als „Gaia-X Qualified Project“ ausgezeichnet. Dies bedeutet, dass das Projekt mit den Prinzipien und technischen Standards von Gaia-X übereinstimmt, was seinen Stellenwert innerhalb des Gaia-X-Ökosystems erhöht. FAIR Data Spaces is a “Gaia-X Qualified Project”

The FAIR Data Spaces project, in which NFDI is involved, has been designated as a “Gaia-X Qualified Project” under the recently established Gaia-X Endorsement Programme. This signifies that the project is solidly aligned with the Gaia-X principles and technical standards, enhancing its standing within the Gaia-X ecosystem. FAIR Data Spaces: Open Call ist gestartet

Arbeiten Sie mit uns an der Entwicklung von Bausteinen für einen gemeinsamen Datenraum für Industrie und Wissenschaft! Im FAIR DS Open Call sind wir auf der Suche nach Anwendungsfällen, die vor allem die Industrieseite weiter mit den FAIR-DS-Entwicklungen verbindet. Die Implementierungsarbeiten werden etwa ein halbes Jahr dauern. Dabei unterstützt das FAIR-DS-Konsortium die ausgewählten Anwendungsfällen und organisiert gemeinsame Hackathons und Demonstrationssitzungen. Bewerbungen sind noch bis zum 7. Mai 2024 möglich. FAIR Data Spaces: Open Call has started

Work with us on the development of building blocks for a common data space for industry and science! In the FAIR DS Open Call, we are looking for use cases that further connect the industry side in particular with the FAIR DS developments. The implementation work will take around six months. The FAIR-DS consortium will support the selected use cases and organise joint hackathons and demonstration sessions. Applications are still possible until May 7, 2024. Call for Proposals: NFDI4Objects Dataship

Noch bis zum 17. Mai können sich Forschende aller Karrierestufen auf das neue NFDI4Objects Dataship mit einem Proposal bewerben. Die vier Gewinner:innen haben ab 1. Juli drei Monate Zeit, ihre Datensätze nach den FAIR-Kriterien mit Unterstützung einer/eines Mentor:in aus dem Konsortium für eine Open Access-Publikation aufzubereiten. Call for Proposals: NFDI4Objects Dataship

Until 17th of May, researchers at all career levels can submit a proposal for the new NFDI4Objects Dataship. The four winners will have three months, starting on 1st of July, to prepare their datasets for open access publication in accordance with the FAIR criteria with the support of a mentor from the consortium. NFDI4Microbiota begrüßt drei neue Use Cases

NFDI4Microbiota Use Cases sind wissenschaftliche Projekte aus der Praxis, die sich mit verschiedenen Themen befassen in denen Mikrobiota-Dateninfrastrukturen und -Dienste zum Einsatz kommen. Im März begrüßte NFDI4Microbiota drei neue Use Cases. Diese Projekte zielen darauf ab, bei der Erstellung von Wissensgraphen für verknüpfte mikrobielle Daten (MicroBioKG) zu helfen, sich auf die Sammlung und Extraktion von Bildmetadaten (LichenMetaImage) zu konzentrieren oder eine kuratierte Datenbank für virale Sequenzen (VirJenDB) bereitzustellen. NFDI4Microbiota welcomes three new Use Cases
NFDI4Microbiota Use Cases are real-world scientific projects addressing diverse topics that rely on microbiota data infrastructures and services. In March, NFDI4Microbiota welcomed three new Use Cases. These projects aim to assist in the creation of knowledge graphs for linked microbial data (MicroBioKG), focus on the collection and extraction of image metadata (LichenMetaImage), or provide a curated database for viral sequences (VirJenDB). R:hovono geht online! Das gemeinsame Register für historische und objektbezogene Vokabulare und Normdaten der Konsortien NFDI4Memory und NFDI4Objects ist fertiggestellt und wurde am 23.04.24 in einem Webinar über Zoom von 12-14 Uhr vorgestellt. Das kostenlose Webinar wurde aufgezeichnet und wird später als Stream on Demand zur Verfügung gestellt. Bei Fragen wenden Sie sich gerne an ta2-nfdi4memory@geschichte.uni-halle.de.

R:hovono goes online! The joint register for historical and object-related vocabularies and standard data of the NFDI4Memory and NFDI4Objects consortia has been completed and was presented on 23rd April 2024 during a webinar via Zoom from 12-14h. NFDI4Memory stellt Zotero-Library zu Datenqualität und Datenqualitätsmanagement zur Verfügung

Die NFDI4Memory Task Area „Data Quality“ hat eine Zotero-Library zur Verfügung gestellt, die Titel zu den Themen Datenqualität und Datenqualitätsmanagement versammelt. Die Bibliothek enthält Quellen aus verschiedenen Genres: Artikel, Blogs, Bücher, Videos, Präsentationen etc. Zugrunde liegt ein 4M-Tagging, das in der Dokumentation sowie dem ersten Notiz-Item ausführlich beschrieben wird. Ihr Feedback und Ihre Nutzungserfahrungen können Sie jederzeit gerne Dr. Anna-Lena Körner (anna-lena.koerfer@herder-institut.de), Peggy Große (p.grosse@deutsches-museum.de) und Anna Pravdyuk (anna.pravdyuk@herder-institut.de) zukommen lassen.

NFDI4Memory provides Zotero library on data quality and data quality management

The NFDI4Memory Task Area “Data Quality” has made available a Zotero library containing titles on the topics of data quality and data quality management. The library contains sources from various genres: articles, blogs, books, videos, presentations, etc. It is based on 4M tagging, which is described in detail in the documentation and the first note item. GHGA kommentiert WHO-Richtlinie und BMG-Entwurf zu MVGenomV

GHGA, die TMF e. V. und weitere Institutionen haben eine gemeinsame Stellungnahme zum Referentenentwurf des Bundesministeriums für Gesundheit für eine Verordnung zum Modellvorhaben Genomsequenzierung nach §64e Absatz 12 des SGB V abgegeben. Darüber hinaus folgte GHGA dem Aufruf zur Kommentierung einer neuen WHO-Richtlinie für den Zugang, die Nutzung und die Weitergabe von Genomdaten. GHGA begrüßt eine Richtlinie, die weltweit anwendbare Prinzipien festlegt, und schlägt vor, die Frage der Wiederverwendung und die Rolle von Dateninfrastrukturen stärker in den Mittelpunkt zu stellen.

GHGA comments on WHO policy and BMG MVGenomV drafts

GHGA, TMF e. V. and other institutions have submitted a joint statement (German version only) on the Federal Ministry of Health’s draft bill for an ordinance on the Genome Sequencing Model Project in accordance with Section 64e(12) of the SGB V. GHGA also followed the call for comments on a new WHO policy for Genome Data Access, Use and Sharing. Welcoming a policy that will set out globally applicable principles, GHGA suggests a stronger focus on the issue of re-use and the role of data infrastructures.

Veröffentlichung des „FAIRmat Guide to Legal Aspects in RDM“

Der „FAIRmat Guide to Legal Aspects in RDM“ wurde im März 2024 veröffentlicht. Es handelt sich dabei um einen praktischen Leitfaden, der einen Überblick über die wichtigsten rechtlichen Aspekte in den verschiedenen Phasen des Datenlebenszyklus bietet und speziell für Studierende, Postdocs und Principal Investigators entwickelt wurde, um sie beim effektiven Management der rechtlichen Aspekte von Forschungsdaten zu unterstützen. Erfolgreicher FDM-Workshop: Herausforderungen und Bedarfe von Nachwuchswissenschaftler:innen in Film- und Medienwissenschaft

Der Workshop der Cultural Research Data Academy von NFDI4Culture bot Nachwuchswissenschaftler:innen beim 37. Film- und Medienwissenschaftlichen Kolloquium die Gelegenheit, sich bereits früh in ihrer Karriere mit den Themen Forschungsdatenmanagement und Datenkompetenz vertraut zu machen. Die Teilnehmenden lernten beispielsweise den Datenlebenszyklus in Bezug auf audiovisuelle Daten kennen, aber auch Einführungen zum FAIR-Begriff und den CARE-Prinzipien für indigene Data Governance, AV-Tools sowie Repositorien und Open-Access-Publikationsformate.

Die Teilnehmenden berichteten von vielfältigen Herausforderungen, vor denen die Film- und Medienwissenschaft beim Umgang mit Forschungsdaten derzeit steht: Die Nutzung von proprietärer/nicht-proprietärer Software zum FDM, das Fehlen von IT-Kenntnisse in Bezug auf Datensammlung und Datenanalyse, der Umgang mit Daten, die über einen sehr langen Zeitraum gesammelt wurden und die keinen Standards entsprechen, der Verlust von (beispielsweise plattformbezogenen) Forschungsdaten und die Veröffentlichung von Data Sets unter Beachtung ethischer Gesichtspunkte und rechtlicher Schranken.

Neben positivem Feedback zum Workshop äußerten die Nachwuchswissenschaftler:innen Wünsche für Anschlusskurse: Praktisch orientierte Formate zu Datensystematisierung und Organisation und direkten Anwendungen am eigenen Material sowie rechtliche Themen interessierten die Teilnehmenden über den Rahmen des Basiskurses hinaus. Auf diese Bedarfe möchte die Cultural Research Data Academy in Zukunft mit weiteren Kursangeboten eingehen, um die nächste Generation von Forscher:innen bestmöglich auf ihrem Weg zu unterstützen.

Successful FDM workshop: Challenges and needs of early career researchers in film and media studies

The NFDI4Culture Cultural Research Data Academy workshop at the 37th Film and Media Studies Colloquium offered early career researchers the opportunity to learn about research data management and data literacy early on in their careers. For example, participants learnt about the data life cycle in relation to audiovisual data, as well as introductions to the FAIR concept and the CARE principles for indigenous data governance, AV tools, repositories and open access publication formats.

The participants reported on the many challenges currently facing film and media studies when dealing with research data: The use of proprietary/non-proprietary software for RDM, the lack of IT skills in relation to data collection and data analysis, the handling of data that has been collected over a very long period of time and does not meet any standards, the loss of (for example platform-related) research data and the publication of data sets in compliance with ethical considerations and legal barriers.

In addition to positive feedback on the workshop, the young researchers expressed their wishes for follow-up courses: participants were interested in practical formats on data systematisation and organisation and direct applications to their own material as well as legal topics beyond the scope of the basic course. The Cultural Research Data Academy would like to respond to these needs with further courses in the future in order to provide the next generation of researchers with the best possible support on their path.

MaRDI ist auf der MS Wissenschaft mit dem Spiel “Citizen Quest”

Ab dem 14. Mai 2024 geht das Schiff MS Wissenschaft auf seine Reise durch Deutschland. Das diesjährige Motto der dort präsentieren Wissenschaftsausstellung ist Freiheit. MaRDI wird das Multiplayer-Spiel „Citizen Quest: Gemeinsam für eine freiere Welt“ zeigen. In ihm bewegen sich die Spieler*innen durch eine Stadt und erkunden Freiheit in ihren verschiedenen Formen. Das Abenteuer beginnt auf einem Mathematik-Schiff, das im Universitätsviertel der Stadt angedockt hat. Hier werben Pionier*innen der Wissenschaftsfreiheit für Forschungsdaten, die „FAIR“ sind: das heißt die Daten sind auffindbar, zugänglich, verknüpfbar und wiederverwendbar (englisch: findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable).

MaRDI on board the MS Wissenschaft with the game „Citizen Quest“

Starting May 14, 2024, the ship MS Wissenschaft will embark on its annual tour. This year’s tour theme revolves around the concept of freedom. MaRDI will showcase the multi-player game “Citizen Quest: Together for a freer world”. Players navigate a city environment, exploring various facets of freedom. The adventure begins aboard a mathematical vessel recently docked in the city’s university quarter. Here, advocates of scientific freedom promote the sharing of research data in a FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable) manner.

Erfolgreiches Konsortialtreffen und neue Mitglieder in NFDI4Chem

Am 10. April fand das Online-Frühjahrstreffen des Chemie-Konsortiums NFDI4Chem statt. Unter den über 60 Teilnehmenden waren auch einige neue Gesichter, denn das Konsortium ist in den letzten Wochen gewachsen: Georg Manolikakes und seine Kolleg:innen von der RPTU, die nun Mitgliedseinrichtung ist, sowie Stefan Kuhn (Tartu University) als beteiligte Person, waren darunter, ebenso wie einige Teilnehmende des Community Workshops im Februar, die an einer Mitarbeit im Konsortium interessiert sind. Der Fokus des Treffens lag auf der Vorbereitung des Fortsetzungsantrages, so wurden Trends, Herausforderungen und Lösungen in Breakout Sessions und mit den Fachbeiräten diskutiert. NFDI4Chem freut sich auf die zukünftige Zusammenarbeit im wachsenden Team!

Successful consortium meeting and new members in NFDI4Chem

The online spring meeting of the chemistry consortium NFDI4Chem took place on 10 April. Among the more than 60 participants were also some new faces, as the consortium has grown in recent weeks: Georg Manolikakes and his colleagues from RPTU, which is now a member institution, as well as Stefan Kuhn (Tartu University) as a participating person, were among them, as well as a number of participants from the community workshop in February who are interested in working in the consortium. The focus of the meeting was on the preparation of the renewal proposal, and so trends, challenges and solutions were discussed in breakout sessions and with the advisory boards. NFDI4Chem is looking forward to future activities in the growing team!

Bald ist es soweit: der erste FAIRagro Community Summit im Herzen Berlins findet statt – und zwar am 17. und 18.06.2024. FAIRagro hat ein spannendes und abwechslungsreiches Programm zusammengestellt. Die Anmeldung ist noch geöffnet bis zum 17.05. – das Konsortium freut sich auch über Ihre Posterbeiträge zu den Themen: Technical concepts for a central middleware infrastructure in agrosystem sciences, Data Standards for agricultural research data management, Data quality and metric for agrosystem science und Scientific Workflow Infrastructure (SciWIn) concepts and possible application in agricultural research. The 1st FAIRagro Community Summit is just around the corner

It’s almost time: the first FAIRagro Community Summit will take place in the heart of Berlin on 17 and 18 June 2024. FAIRagro has put together an exciting and varied programme. Registration is still open until 17 May – the consortium also looks forward to receiving your poster contributions on the following topics: Technical concepts for a central middleware infrastructure in agrosystem sciences, Data Standards for agricultural research data management, Data quality and metric for agrosystem science and Scientific Workflow Infrastructure (SciWIn) concepts and possible application in agricultural research. NFDI4Earth @ EGU24

In diesem Jahr nutzte das NFDI4Earth-Konsortium die Gelegenheit den aktuellen Stand seiner Aktivitäten auf der Generalversammlung der Europäischen Geowissenschaftlichen Union (EGU) einem breiteren Publikum vorzustellen. Die EGU ist eine der bedeutendsten Konferenzen für die Erdsystemwissenschaften in Europa, die 2024 vom 15. bis 19. April 2024 in Wien stattfand und von mehr als 18.000 Teilnehmern besucht wurde.

Es war eine großartige Veranstaltung, um die Fülle von Angeboten und Services der NFDI4Earth zu präsentieren: das User Support Network, das Ausbildungs- und Trainingsportal und den Knowledge Hub. Auch die nationale und internationale Vernetzung ist für NFDI4Earth von entscheidender Bedeutung – so nutzte das Konsortium die Gelegenheit, die gesamte NFDI und fachverwandte Konsortien wie FAIRagro und NFDI4Biodiversity vorzustellen und uns mit vielen Initiativen und Partnern weiter zu vernetzen: CAMELS-DE, die Global Heatflow Database und GeoRoc sowie das Open Geospatial Consortium, das European Plate Observing System, FAIR-EASE, FAIRCORE4EOSC und DataTerra.

NFDI4Earth @ EGU24

This year the NFDI4Earth Consortium took the chance to present the current stage of its activities to a wider audience at the General Assembly of the European Geosciences Union (EGU) – one of the most prominent conference on Earth System Sciences in Europe, which took place from 15 to 19 April 2024 at Vienna, visited by more than 18,000 attendees.

It was a great event to showcase a wealth of NFDI4Earth’s services and tools: the User Support Network, Education and Training Portal, and the Knowledge Hub. National and international connectivity is also critical for NFDI4Earth – so the consortium took the chance to present NFDI in overall, and related consortia, as FAIRagro and NFDI4Biodiversity, and to network with many initiatives and partners: CAMELS-DE, the Global Heatflow Database, and GeoRoc as well as the Open Geospatial Consortium, the European Plate Observing System, FAIR-EASE, FAIRCORE4EOSC, and DataTerra.

Parlamentarisches Frühstück zum Record Linkage mit NFDI4Health und Abgeordneten des Bundestags
Mitglieder von NFDI4Health und Expert:innen aus Politik, Wissenschaft und Gesundheitswesen kamen am 13.
