Humanities@NFDI
New data is created daily in the various disciplines of the humanities. Research data from the humanities is of particular importance for science, the cultural industry and society. This data provides access to the global cultural heritage. In order to ensure the quality of these extensive data sets, to preserve them for generations to come and to make them accessible for research, a cross-disciplinary, cooperative and sustainable management of research data is required within the framework of the NFDI.
In order to best meet the diverse needs of the highly differentiated research landscape in the humanities, the NFDI consortia NFDI4Culture, NFDI4Memory, NFDI4Objects and Text+ prepared a memorandum of understanding in 2019 in preparation for the founding of the NFDI and updated it in 2020.
On the basis of the memorandum, they have since been promoting a cultural change in the way research data is handled in their respective communities, providing each other with mutual and constructive support in pursuit of this common goal.
The cooperation of the humanities within the NFDI takes place in a variety of ways: at workshops (social media series Show & Tell), training courses (register for historical and object-related vocabularies and standard data ‘R:hovono’), standardisation (DFG practice rules ‘Digitisation’ and minimal data set recommendation) and events (FORGE 2021), at the annual conference of the Digital Humanities in German-speaking countries DHd) as well as in the sections, working groups and committees of the NFDI. In this way, the consortia are involved in the communities and, in turn, can be approached by them as a whole in order to jointly represent the interdisciplinary needs of their respective communities in the NFDI and create synergies.
